A coast with history
Paternoster is one of South Africa’s oldest towns, founded in 1863. But long before its founding, Paternoster was a home to nomadic tribes that lived from its abundance. The Khoikhoi (or Khoe ‘Khoekhoe’) peoples were pastoralists who raised cattle and moved to new grazing grounds by season. They also lived from the sea and fynbos, hunting and gathering. Their life on our coast, more specifically their life in Mosselbank where our cottages are, can be dated back more than three thousand years through the discovery of shells and beads.
Paternoster was settled by Europeans in the early 1800s when small homes were built out of limestone, giving it the look that still defines our tradition today of white-washed, single-storied cottages and slightly angles chimneys. Paternoster’s architecture is both signature in its simplicity, aesthetic without being decorative. Our cottages embody and enrich these idea to harmonise between tradition and modernity.
